Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is a rollercoaster of intertwined stories. A pair of hitmen--Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega--working for a Mob Boss by the name of Marsellus Wallace are sent out to retrieve a briefcase that was stolen from him. While retrieving the briefcase, the pair of hitmen hit a few bumps along their path. Butch Coolidge--who is a prizefighting boxer--tries to flee town after killing his opponent when he was paid off to lose the match. However, earlier he had agreed to “go down” in the 5th round, paid off by Marsellus Wallace.

I liked the non-linear format of the film because it kept me engaged and had my eyes locked on the screen at all times. I also liked the dark humor and other situational comedy. The film had many A-lister actors/celebrities which made the realism and acting of the film phenomenal. They made every scene seem so realistic that just sucked you in. And that is what makes good acting. A specific parable in the film I enjoyed dearly was the coffee shop robbery, but the one at the end of the movie in the perspective of Jules and Vincent Vega. Vega handles Hunnybun and Pumpkin very well and it was like a little hostage situation when Vega had Pumpkin at gunpoint. The film has a motif, Vega would recite a specific passage from the Bible.Ezekiel 25:17 “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.” He says this to every person before he would “pop a cap in their ass” although he did not do it in that situation. Also, it is ironic and contradictory that he is going around reciting a passage from the Bible and he is a hitman who kills for money. There were a lot of car scenes and 90% of car scenes are taken place in a warehouse or other indoor set with a green screen in the background. There are many different Stanley Kubrick references throughout the film as well, one being the “416” room number before the “Big Kahuna” scene.

Finally, I would recommend this movie to those who can handle dark and uncomfortable scenes but quickly or simultaneously rewarded with comedy. After seeing it once you will want to see it again and again. You will even learn more about the film and see things you may have not seen before, because everything is in a film on purpose. There is a reason this film is number 8 of the best films of all time, it is a must watch, but viewer discretion is advised.
