Lighting

Over the past few weeks I have been watching videos and helping teach myself about lighting. I have been watching tutorials on Lynda.com from how to set up lighting, to different types of lighting and when you will need to use it, using natural light or other lights to compliment other lights and etc.. With the skills I am learning from the videos on Lynda.com. I'm also learning why we use lighting and what kind of lighting to use for certain scenes or movies.

An example of a specific type of lighting is the type of lighting we see used in horror/scary movies. In scary movies you see a lot of shadows with low light and the shadows being especially dark. They use this lighting because it gives the ere and bone wrenching feeling while watching a horror movie. You can also film a horror movie or just about any movie anywhere at almost any time of day. You can use certain types of paper to cover windows for bright and sunny days to make it less bright, different mood of color (depending on color and opacity of paper), or make it completely dark for those late night shots or horror shots.

In many occasions in movies the natural sunlight can be too much or not enough. In a house with a considerable amount of windows on a very bright and sunny day, it may be too bright for the camera. Or it may be too dark and you need bright sun light for a mid day scene. Using bright lights correctly and using reflectors you can achieve this. You can also use reflectors for background shadow and to bounce a little light off to a certain area to have a layer of depth in the background.
